PIER MUSUEM, MIAMI
PIER Museum
Worked for Design Consortium. The design unfolds as a cohesion of two metaphors - The American Dream Bubble and Thriving DNA of Miami. The concept was to interpret the fragility of the American Dream thus the Transparent Structure and moment to moment struggle within its brilliance of hope that it extrudes. Proposed combination of thermo electric surfaces in combination with optical color changing glass will take this one step further when built. The relatively narrow constrictions as transition spaces between three globules stand metaphorically as visual suggestions of stages in immigrants life in fulfillment of his dream.
The museum is designed into three public planes. Entry level is connected via bridge connecting 5th Avenue and the Pier. The entrance boardwalk directly engulfs the audience with a view of entire Eloquence. Museum functions, permanent exhibit area and information lobbies are designed entwining double height spaces looking below the library level and that of the cafeteria deck above. Administrative functions below and other services split between the other two levels access by ramps circulating around bubble structure.
Like a cocoon nourishes the embryonic form in the nature, each bubble structure of this built system is designed as a self contained energy efficient unit. The basic transparent composition wraps into what generates maximum surface area for the photovoltaic operations. This energy will be used for the thermoelectric and optical light simulations which is an integral part of the changing facade design. Special structural transparency fused with solar power generating cells will form the major surface component. An interior lattice as structural module will allow controlled operation of double facade system. It would permit natural ventilation to partake in the air exchange process for the entire facility.
